Volunteering for RAW
Karu Library Foundation
The Library Foundation in Karu was set up several years ago. The library is a small property with two small classrooms and a space for a modest library with books that have been kindly donated over the years.
Currently, the foundation has been attracting a large group of children who attend the library after school to do their homework and read. The library is also open at the weekends and school holidays meaning the demand is overwhelming with over 60 children going to the library.
Through providing the children with free access to resources and additional training, the Foundation is improving literacy levels of vulnerable children. Children from the surrounding area go the library on a daily basis and are reaping the benefits of having unlimited access to books, in a safe environment.
The library needs support from volunteers to help sustain their activities and meet the demand from a growing number of children attending the library at weekends.
RAW is appealing for volunteers to come and run simple activities, storytelling or craft ideas on Saturday mornings/afternoons. The entire family can participate and is a good opportunity for older children to volunteer and mentor younger children with reading.
The library is around 30 minutes outside Abuja (less depending on traffic). At the weekend, the library is open from 7am-4pm and volunteers are welcome to attend the library between those times. Please get in touch if you are interested in volunteering in Karu. We can transport volunteers and accompany them to the library at their chosen time.
