About RAW

RAW - supporting literacy development and creative writing in Nigeria.

RAW recognises the importance of reading for pleasure for both educational and personal development and seeks to address the imbalance in the reading culture in Nigeria and to focus on the reading of a wider range of books, going beyond the textbook. Our vision is to cultivate a society where reading and writing for pleasure is encouraged and nurtured. The programme aims to inspire a love of reading and writing through diverse and meaningful activities that are relevant to young people and adults in Nigeria.

Our aims:
-          To promote reading for pleasure and writing creatively - going beyond the textbook and introducing poetry, fiction and picture books into the home and classroom.
-          Equipping teachers with active, practical approaches to teaching creatively in the classroom that will inspire, enhance and develop classroom practice and students’ learning abilities.
-          Encouraging adults to read through book launches and reading events, book clubs and creative writing classes.
-          The inclusion of children, young adults and adults who struggle with reading and writing.
-          Family Matters: Supporting and facilitating the involvement of parents and family to foster the love of reading early in development regardless of ethnic background, family income, or level of parental education. RAW will provide something for all.
-          Providing reliable research; giving a sound insight into literacy in Nigeria, highlighting the areas of need, the challenges specific to Nigeria.
-          Advocating policy at a Federal and State level to provide a sound framework to support RAW’s initiatives.
